Champions League Betting Highlights: Upsets galore as big names of Europe take a collective stumble

Joe Dyer reports on a dramatic night of Champions League action on Betfair where Barcelona and Inter Milan are among the short-price losers.

It's been a night of upsets across Europe with favourites failing to win in England, Spain, Germany and Cyprus.

Atletico Madrid looked set fair for victory at Anfield and were backed at [1.07] before Steven Gerrard won a dubious penalty at the death, which he converted. The draw touched [13.5] on the exchange.

Atletico had earlier been backed at 16.5 to hold the half-time advantage while the 1-1 correct score had risen to [10.0] at the time of the penalty. Roma shocked Premier League leaders Chelsea with a 3-1 win at the Stadio Olimpico. Luca Spalletti's team were backed at [5.5] to beat the Blues (themselves matched at [1.94]).

The 3-1 correct score touched [90.0] on Betfair.

Inter Milan were highly fancied to beat Champions League dark horses Anorthosis Famagusta and were backed in to [1.11] to win before a comeback from the home team, who touched [1.55] when leading in the second half.

Inter were backed at [1.01] (£3,866 matched) to hold the half-time advantage but conceded a late goal to deny their short-price backers.

In a dramatic, see-saw match the 3-3 correct score was backed at [150.0] while six goals or more touched [33.0].

Perhaps the most surprising result of the night came at the Nou Camp where Barcelona were held by Basel.

The home team took a 63rd minute lead and were backed at [1.03] with £51,330 traded only to concede an 83rd minute equaliser.

The 1-1 final score was backed at [36.0].

Panathinaikos shocked Werder Bremen, who were beaten 3-0 on their home patch. That final score was backed at [290.0].
