Dasara or Dushera celebrations in India

Dasara or Dussehra or Navrathri (âNavâ meaning 9 and ârathriâ meaning night) is celebrated all over India and Nepal for 10 days. It is called as âDashainâ in Nepal. This festival falls on Padya, which is the first day of the Hindu month âAshwayuja also known as Ashwinaâ. The festival concludes royally on the 10th day i.e., Vijayadashami (âVijayaâ means to win and âDashamiâ means 10). Each day is celebrated with different rituals in different parts of the country. The significance of this festival is the triumph of Good over Evil. Generally it is the festival to celebrate the slaying of the demon Mahishasura who took the form of a buffalo in the hands of Goddess Chamundeshwari who is called by different names like Durga, Mahishasura Mardini, Maha Kali, Ambe etc.,
