Azhagu Sundaram (Dhanush) is a young lad from a village who is the only son of his parents. His mother (Archana), Azhagu's father dies of some disease and he moves to Chennai in search of a job.

A couple of events force him to wield a knife, from an innocent youth he transforms into a gangster; he is the don with the heart of gold.

Meanwhile Parattai's mother leaves her village in search of her son and comes to the city. But in vain the mother is not able to meet her son; the rest of the story revolves around how the mother and son meet.
