It might be recalled that the mid-semester examinations were held in the last week of March when clashes between two groups of students had led the Besu authorities to the decision of vacating the hostels inside the campus. Many students submitted blank answer scripts and teachers boycotted the examination procedure as well as the evaluation of the mid-semester answer scripts. The issue could not be discussed at the academic council meeting held in the first week of June as the meeting was adjourned. The issue was later taken up at the Board of Management (BOM) and a committee was formed. It was decided that the committee will recommend the mode of evaluation after reviewing the entire situation and BOM would act accordingly. But the committee is yet to do this.A section of teachers and students feel that the authorities are purposefully doing this to teach them a lesson.Meanwhile, the academic circle is of the opinion that a section of people associated with Besu, who are not in favour of the upgradation of Besu to Institute of National Importance (INI) status, are purposefully creating such impediments to malign the image of the institute that may delay the upgradation process further. When contacted, Prof NR Banerjea, Vice-Chancellor of Besu, however, refused to comment on this impasse. He only said that the classes for the first semester will begin on 14 July. Classes for the remaining students can begin only after declaration of the semester results, the date of which, is still undecided, Prof Banerjea added.Source: thestatesman.net
