ICC to Put Ceiling on T-20 Fixtures to Save Test Cricket

The Gen-X likes it for its high pace and hip hop charms. The Orthodox quarter dismisses it with the apprehension that it may some day kill the real cricket that is Test cricket. The ICC has resolved to end the dispute between old and the new and plans to keep the number of international Twenty-20 cricket (t20-world-cup-2009.html) ties to a limited number. With Twenty-20 rising to immense popularity, chills run down the spines of Orthodox in whose opinion, too many T-20 may call for the demise of real cricket that is the Test version of the game. However, ICC has made it clear that it is going to restrict the volume of shortest version of the game to prevent it from eating into the five-day version. Speaking at a joint press conference hosted by the ICC and electronic partners LG to extend their partnership until 2015, ICC chief Haroon Lorgat made it clear, that in any international series, the Test and ODIs are going to remain the prime fixtures with the extra provision for one or two T-20 games. “The ICC never saw Twenty20 as exhibition cricket. But in terms of increasing the number of T20 games its not possible. Twenty20 cricket has been a huge success in domestic competitions, and we at ICC feel T20 cricket fits well into that programme to boost the domestic structure of countries. We don't mind Twenty20 cricket being played in great numbers at the domestic level, but it should stay limited at the international level, said Lorgat. He also refuted the claims of the concerned quarter that the popularity of Test cricket is fast receding with the growing popularity of domestic as well as international twenty-20 events. He however informed the cricket news media that ICC is weighing the pros and cons of the day and night Test matches and also informed that the research is on for developing the special ball required for the purpose.Elsewhere, Steve Elworthy, the ICC's tournament director is confident that the upcoming World Twent-20 championship will be a huge success despite a bit of cricket overdose that England is going to experience this summer. He told a leading cricket news portal that ICC had learnt its lessons from the failures of Caribbean World Cup in 2007, and this time it has taken great care not to overload the international cricket calendar with too many mega- events. He insists, even though the Ashes remain the major attraction of the English summer, T-20 WC (t20-world-cup-2009.html) will be a hit in England. “Twenty20 in this country is extremely popular. “Our first set of ticket allocations went out just under a year ago, and over 100,000 tickets were sold out in 48 hours. There are still tickets available, but we expect 95-98% capacity at the key double-headers, and we are well on target in terms of our goals of over 80% attendance across the entire tournament,” confirmed Elworthy.   read more »
