After the recent title track in Bhool Bhulaiyaa which borrowed its first line from the 1970s blockbuster ‘Hare Rama Hare Krishna’, we will soon have a My Name is Anthony Gonsalvez hitting the silver screens all over. Taking its name from the superhit song ‘My Name is Anthony Gonsalvez’ in the 70’s film ‘Amar Akbar Anthony', this one’s actually a movie starring Nikhil Dwivedi, Amrita Rao, Pawan Malhotra and Mithun Chakraborty in the lead. My Name is Anthony Gonsalvez or rather My Name is Anthony Gonsalvez 2007 (to avoid confusion) is directed by E. Niwas and produced by no other than Bollywood’s famous King Khan (Shah Rukh Khan) and Bhushan Kumar. The music for My Name is Anthony Gonsalvez has been composed by Pritam Chakraborty. The movie’s music was released by Shah Rukh himself recently in the presence of the entire film crew. The release of the romantic, comedy film My Name is Anthony Gonsalvez, on the other hand, is scheduled for 11 January 2008. The film will witness the debut of Nikhil Dwivedi as Anthony Gonsalves. The story On a normal rush day, probably nobody would care to look twice at Anthony Gonsalves (played by Nikhil Dwivedi), a bartender in Jimmy's Pub in Bandra, Mumbai. But this does not at all dissuade this pretty ordinary guy from dreaming big. An actor is what he has always desired to become, even though his job is limited to running the Jimmy’s bar In Mumbai’s Bandra region efficiently! The pub’s, in reality, just a legitimate face for Anthony’s bosses – Sikander, Maqsood and Riyaaz – prominent names in Mumbai’s underworld circuit. Sikander Bhai is Anthony's generous benefactor and protector. Infact, Anthony was very young when both his parents died. Smoking beedi near a roadside tea-stall, it was Sikander who spotted little Anthony and his heart goes out to him. The don takes the street urchin under his tutelage and deposited him at an orphanage run by father Briganza. While Anthony gets both the father’s and Shikander’s sympathy, the don sees in Anthony a brother he never had. Time passes. Sikander makes sure Anthony does not have anything to do with the gang or its dirty business. To keep him out of the entire muck, Sikander encharges Anthony to look after the pub instead. But Anthony’s heart and mind is set on somewhere else! After a lot of grilling, Anthony finally manages to befriend an old time photographer, Moorthy who’s a frequent to the Jimmy’s Pub. The new photographer-friend helps Anthony with his portfolio and leads on the right places to go to and people to meet. Meanwhile not only does Anthony’s desire to become a hero become stronger, his day-dreaming too gets weirder. The lousy day-dreaming sure lands Anthony into a whole lot of trouble at the hands of Fr. Briganza and his penance includes cleaning the stained glasses in the church, cutting the creepers in the cemetery, etc. This sequence beautifully reveals the warm, loving relationship between Anthony and father, who’s both like a father-figure and moral guardian. One day, Anthony gets to eavesdrop on the conversation between Murtaza (leader of the gang) and Riyaaz, in which the latter is heard to be poisoning Murtaza’s mind against Sikander who is oblivious to everything. Hence begins a very Julius Caesar kind of a plot. A perturbed Anthony goes to give an audition and meets Riya, whom he had met once before at the cemetery and fallen in love with her at first sight. Riya turn out to be the Assistant Director on this film being made by an NRI filmmaker, Ms. Bharucha. As luck would have it, the film’s an adaptation of Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar and is themed on the Mumbai underworld. Anthony auditions for the part of Mark Anthony and is very touched by the story as it seems to be ditto of what was happening around him in real life. Especially the resemblance of Mark’s character to that of Sikander and his comrades plotting against him. Anthony acting impresses Ms. Bharucha and he finally gets short listed for the part. Anthony's romance with Riya moves on smoothly, until Michael steals a megaphone and palms it off to Anthony for a quarter of rum! The megaphone episode sparks off the first quarrel between Anthony and Riya. Riya yields finally, but only after Anthony sufficiently appeases her! Meanwhile, Ms. Bharucha informs Anthony that he’s been selected to play the part of Mark in her film. He rushes home to spill the beans before Sikander bhai ultimately, but instead witnesses a crime being committed by the gang. This brings inspector Khan into picture, who’s an honest, stern officer investigating the murder of a dead colleague. Khan somehow gets winds of Anthony being the witness to the crime and so begins keeping and eye on him and the gang 24x7. Though Anthony has not revealed what he saw, yet the gang start suspecting him of doing so. Sikander's petrified! My Name Is Anthony Gonsalves is basically a story capturing the relationship between two stark opposite characters i.e. Anthony and Sikander Bhai. Friendship, loyalty, love, career, truth, morality – the film’s a lovely potpourri of emotions!   read more »
