Paul Graham on why it is difficult for India/China to reproduce Silicon Valley

Quoting: "I could see India one day producing a rival to Silicon Valley. Obviously they have the right people: you can tell that by the number of Indians in the current Silicon Valley. The problem with India itself is that it's still so poor." How true is this one? What is your take on this?   read more »

I think Indians are very much averse to RISK. And this could be due to the fact that "India is still so poor".

"India is still so poor" >> to some extend this is true.

But India has made the platforms for the "true startups" >> IITS. But these brain stuffs are running away fro India. What stopping them to start a startup? I think money & better awareness that convince them saying if US can do IndiaCAN!

the startups incubated by IITs are not seen "popular" to the users in the internet world. why?

IIST is job half done >> they create the best and let it go away. What they can do is identify the talents who are "startup" minded and make a platform for them by sourcing the fund. It could be far more than doing internal "incubation"

Tow stumbling blocks I think in India is poor infrastructure & lack of awareness in understanding the web ideas amoung the rich people!

Even "Bangalore" does the miracle in revamping the infrastructure, it takes ages for this city to reproduce the real silicon valley.

Refer the following extract about Singapore inthis article

"Singapore would face a similar problem. Singapore seems very aware of the importance of encouraging startups. But while energetic government intervention may be able to make a port run efficiently, it can't coax startups into existence. A state that bans chewing gum has a long way to go before it could create a San Francisco."

what I think is Singapore has the most innovative goverment, the best strategic geograpic location in Asia..what lacks here maybe talents who think about "startups". If Indians still can't reproduce a silicon valley yet, there will be more "startup" minded people flying to singapore soon enough to reproduce SV!!
