Read The FULL REVIEW OF Psych: The Greatest Adventure In The History Of Basic Cable

(S03E04) So far this season of Psych has been a little different than all of the previous ones, because our favorite detectives never had to work on an “official” case, one for which they’d been hired by the police department (and for which they’d get paid). We always had something, more or less creative, to find our boys working out a new mystery outside of the usual application for their Psych agency.

And last week I remember wishing this would change, mostly because Lassiter & Juliet where sent back to not-so-good B plots that only allowed for them to have about 5 seconds of screen time each week, and close to no interactions with either Shawn or Gus. This week, it was both the same, and different — and in the end, it worked out pretty good!

It was the same in that they still weren’t working for the police and helping on an official case, but it was different because there was an official case, an investigation that did brought back together the police and our boys, only they were suspects! But it turned out to be a really great thing, probably because for once we had all the characters of the show, including Henry, all in the same room interacting with each other.

I would still have liked to see a little more of Lassiter in there, but I have to admit that Juliet’s moment, yelling at Shawn to stop with the jokes and get to the point already was pretty great stuff! We also saw that, after the revelations that Shawn discovered about his dad, how he wasn’t the one who left his mother, I think their relationship evolved a little.

Sure, they still have that same way of discussing and making fun or annoying one another, but especially in that last scene at that awesome place I can’t remember the name of, it seemed there was something different in there, like they are now closer than they were a couple of years ago. And since we’re on the family side, let’s meet with the one Shawn used to wish was his father, uncle Jack !

If you ever wondered from where Shawn had all this craziness, love for the public eye and taste for the adventure, there’s your answer. Jack was a perfect fit for the Spencer family, and at first he was a really cool guy as well, or looked that way. Of course, as long as the episode went by it became more and more obvious that he wasn’t that much of a great role model or father figure, or just partner, but Shawn still wanted to believe, that’s why he went there and waited for so long.

So this episode was not really about a recent mystery, like solving a crime and finding a murderer, it was your good plain plain treasure hunt. The one with pirates, maps, and gold. And while on more than one occasion quite predictable, it was still plenty of fun. There’s been one thing that did trouble me though, it’s that “couleur” never meant “paint” in french, never ever, not even close.

“Couleur” means “color”, and that’s about it. I guess I can see how you can link that to paint, but there isn’t any connection there on its own, it’s the word used relating to everyday colors, the color of the sky, pen, your shirt, my cellphone, that car, her eyes, anything. It’s just color, and I can’t see where in the world they would have heard that it meant “paint”, no way. That somehow Jack would go from there to paint, maybe, but both him and Juliet, really?

Anyways, lots of fun, lots of pop references, all the characters involved, and of course another (fake) pineapple in the mix. Another pretty good episode of the show, for sure. That said, I think now might be just the right time to go back to the usual police case, because that’s still the heart of the show, and also they need the money. Once in a while it’s good to try something new, but I’m not sure it should become a new constant…

Last thing : I’ve seen talk about product placement in last week’s episode, and I’m sure there will be some this week as well. I have to say that, while somehow last week didn’t bothered me that much - yes, I felt it was okay and quite natural for them to talk that way, sue me - this week’s sales pitch from Shawn at the end of the episode was really a bit too much on the obvious.
