Teej Festival in Chandigarh

The Teej Festival in Chandigarh is one of the most important religious festivals of the city. The festival is celebrated mainly by the women folk and is a clear example of India's heritage, tradition and customs. The Teej Festival in Chandigarh is celebrated in the month of August, usually during the first week. It is often considered as the festival of monsoons as it is celebrated to usher in the monsoon season. The festival is held in the Rock Garden and is celebrated by the married and the unmarried women. There are three different types of Teej festivals that are held in one year, which are the Haryali Teej, Kajari Teej an the Hartalika Teej. In the Haryali Teej the women offer prayers to the Moon God, while in the Kajari Teej the entire community comes together to worship the Neem Tree. The Hartalika Teej is the most difficult of the lot as one is expected to fast for three days. The women break their fast by eating Baya, a religious food, and worshipping Goddess Parvati. During the Teej Festival in Chandigarh, the married women visit their parent's house. They buy new clothes and also get gifts from their parents as well as from their in-laws. They offer prayers to Lord Shiva and his wife Parvati. The married women pray for the long life of their husbands, while the unmarried women pray for prospective grooms. Teej is celebrated with great fanfare by the Indian women. They buy colorful bangles and also go for shopping on this festival. They decorate their hands with henna and mehendi deigns. The women sing and dance during this festival. One of the major rituals of this festival is the tying of swings on the Nyagrodha Tree, which is considered as a symbol of knowledge. A large number of cultural programs are also held during this festival that are attended by a large number of people. The festivals and events in Chandigarh are known for their uniqueness and glamour and the Teej Festival in Chandigarh is no exception. It is on of the most vibrant festivals of the city.
