Things to Remember When Recovering From Surgery

Undergoing surgery of any kind can be an intimidating and scary process for many people. Whether or not you are planning on an elective surgery or if it is one that you didn’t see coming, there is a great deal that can make one nervous about the prospect. Even if you know that you are in capable hands with the surgeon who will be performing the procedure on you, the idea of recovering from surgery might still have you quite nervous.

The best approach that you can take to your recovery from surgery is a proactive one. Make your arrangements ahead of time if you can and try to plan for every eventuality. Depending on the type of surgery you are undergoing, you might need quite a bit of help during the first week or two of your recovery.

There are also a number of things that you should plan for that can help you to recover faster in the long run. Even though you should never rush your recovery process and always listen to your doctor’s guidance, things like eating right and staying hydrated can really help you along.

With that in mind, here are a few things that you should remember when you are planning for your post-operation recovery.

Physical Therapy

When recovering from surgery, there is going to be a period of time when your physician will want you to stay off your feet and rest. However, most doctors will want their patients to start moving around as soon as possible after an operation. Not only does this help to avoid a build-up of fluid in your body, but the right level of movement can also assist with the healing process.

Your physician might prescribe a course of treatment with a physical therapist for your post-surgery recovery. The right physio can help you to regain strength in your body and build up your flexibility and mobility.

Hydration

Your surgeon will likely emphasize to you just how important it is stay as hydrated as possible when you are recovering from surgery. Staying hydrated will help your body to ward off infection and keep your blood circulating properly so that you can heal.

After your surgery, you might find that you aren’t feeling up to making multiple trips to the sink to fill up glass after glass of water. Because of this, you should get yourself a large water bottle that you can keep by your bed so that you can stay hydrated particularly in the early days following your surgery.

Arrange Help

There is nothing wrong with being an independent person who prefers to look after themselves. However, the time when you are recovering from surgery isn’t really the time to exercise your independence.

Rather, you should arrange help ahead of time so that you know that you will have everything that you need. Ask someone to help you get groceries so that you have enough food, and make sure that any pets you have are boarded elsewhere or otherwise taken care of.
