Mastering the Trials of Moving Day

Moving day can be fun, or it can be a day full of stress and yelling. Usually it starts out one way and then when people get tired or something breaks, the tempers start to flare up. It doesn’t have to be this way, the way to have a happy crew, and to have a sense of teamwork all day is to predict what your work mates are good at, and what their expectations are. Also give yourself plenty of time. Another important factor is to be well prepared. There is nothing worse than showing up to help someone move, and they haven’t even got their stuff in boxes yet. Here are some tips to help moving day go smoothly.

  • Boxes: Putting stuff in boxes is not for moving day. You should start putting things in boxes weeks before the move, and on the last day you should have all the final items packed away before any of the muscle shows up. Make sure you have a system for labelling and try to be clear about where each box is supposed to go. You should buy boxes for your move; NYC movers have boxes available. The reason you buy boxes is so that they are all new and they are all the same size. This helps with packing and it helps to ensure the boxes won’t break on the way.
  • Food: The true key to happiness on moving day is the food. Food is a great motivator, and if your crew knows there is a pizza, or some fried chicken waiting for them when the job is done, they are going to be in great a mood and working hard to get things done. Have some snacks available along the way too, especially stuff to drink, but leave out the beer until later. Trust me.
  • Be organized: The key to having an enjoyable moving day, is to be organized. And not just organized as in what goes in the truck next, but have the people organized so everyone knows what it is they are supposed to do. Someone should oversee where things go on the truck, someone should oversee directing the movers in the house. Try to make sure things are done in stages if possible. Get the strong guys moving the big stuff, but don’t crush any egos either; moving day can be a bit of a demonstration day for the boys.
  • Truck: Get a big truck. Don’t try to figure out if you can get everything on a small truck, it doesn’t cost that much more for a big one. That way you know it will all fit. If you are renting a professional style panel truck, or if you are hiring a moving company. Go with one size bigger than you think you need.

Moving day can be an excellent bonding experience, it is a sort of old-time neighborly activity, and it is the sort of things communities were built on. Keep a good attitude, don’t get stressed when there are unexpected problems, and reward your help. Then your moving day will go just fine.
